5. NoHo On the Brink of World War II. The picture below shows 1st and Bowery on July 12, 1938. As the men appear to chat nonchalantly, war was brewing in Europe. World War II broke out on September 1, 1939.
4. Lower East Side. Workers dig on the corner of Delancey and Suffolk on July 29, 1908. At the time, the area was a center of Jewish culture (note the signs in Hebrew language). Just up the street was the celebrated Katz Deli, in the same area in now sits, though it was called Iceland & Katz at the time.
3. Flatiron Before It Was Flatiron. The image below shows 23rd Street and Broadway in 1884. In 1884, Grover Cleveland was elected president, the Washington Monument in DC was completed as the world's structure, and Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published. In 1901, ground was broken on the iconic Flatiron Building.
